June’s Journal: Travel Gear Favorites – California Edition
🌄 California’s Parks Are Calling
Dear reader,
There’s something about California’s national parks that makes me feel like anything is possible. One day, I’m standing beneath the giant sequoias of Yosemite. The next, I’m wandering past cacti in Joshua Tree or listening to sea lions bark along the foggy coast of Point Reyes. This state really does have it all — forests, deserts, mountains, beaches, and just enough unpredictability to keep things exciting.
Before every trip, I have a little ritual. I lay out everything I think I need… and then I cut that pile in half. California’s terrain may be diverse, but lugging around unnecessary weight just isn’t my style. I believe in traveling light but smart.
Over time, I’ve found a few trusty essentials that keep me prepared for just about any kind of California adventure. To make packing less stressful and more intentional, I always keep a shortlist of reliable items I trust from past trips. These aren’t glamorous items (well, maybe the sunglasses are), but they’ve never let me down.
🧳 Trail-Tested Favorites for Every California Adventure
Here are my favorite little helpers that always earn a spot in my travel bag:
🥾 On the Trail

🎒 Lightweight Daypack
I’ve tested a few, but my favorite daypack is light on my shoulders, fits a water bottle and journal, and doesn’t look like I’m on a military mission. It’s just right. I used mine nearly every day during our loop from Yosemite to Sequoia and back.
đź’§ Collapsible Water Bottle
Folds flat when it’s empty, tucks into a side pocket, and doesn’t weigh me down. Plus, it helps me feel better about using less plastic. I’ve filled it from mountain springs and ranger stations alike.
🔋 Solar Charger
California sunshine isn’t just pretty—it’s useful! I keep a small solar charger clipped to my pack so my phone is always ready for one more photo (or one more map). Once, in Death Valley, it saved the day when I realized I forgot to charge overnight.
🧦 Wool Socks
No blisters allowed. I’ve learned the hard way that good socks matter more than fancy boots. I bring two pairs in case one gets soggy. They’re warm when it’s chilly, breathable when it’s hot, and always reliable.

Provides guidance on collecting and purifying natural water sources while hiking or camping.
🌞 Sun & Skin Protection
🕶️ Sunglasses with a Strap
There’s always a breeze somewhere in California, and this little strap has saved my glasses from flying into the surf more than once. Bonus: it makes me feel like an explorer.
🧴 Lip Balm with SPF
I used to forget this—and regretted it every time. Now it lives in every pocket I have. The California sun is no joke, especially when you’re hiking at elevation.
🧢 Bonus Must-Have: A Wide-Brim Hat
I didn’t always carry one, but after one too many sunburns in Lassen Volcanic National Park, it’s now a staple. It keeps the sun off my face, makes me feel like a movie explorer, and hides my bad hair days. Win-win-win.
đź”— The Skin Cancer Foundation: Sun Protection Overview
Offers comprehensive advice on sun safety, including the use of sunscreen, protective clothing, and seeking shade.
đź’ˇ Why These Essentials Matter
I hope this list helps you feel prepared and confident as you head out into California’s wide, wild beauty. Whether you’re wandering redwood trails or pausing for sea views along the coast, a few smart items can make the experience a whole lot smoother.
In fact, these favorites of mine have seen everything from misty mornings in Muir Woods to starry nights near the Salton Sea. They’re small, but they make a big difference. I’ve even had a fellow hiker borrow my spare socks once—and she called me her trail angel for the rest of the day.
Would you like to see what I pack for colder trips too? I’m thinking about writing a winter gear edition next. I’ve also started collecting ideas for a Southwest Desert Edition—and yes, that one involves extra chapstick! 💨
