Ingredients:

- 2 oz Bourbon (choose your favorite!)
- 3-5 fresh mint leaves (plus a sprig for garnish)
- 1/2 oz simple syrup (or to taste)
- Crushed ice
- A splash of water (optional)

Instructions:

- Muddle the Mint:
In a glass, gently muddle the fresh mint leaves and simple syrup together. However, be sure not to crush the mint too hard – you just want to release the oils and aroma! - Add the Bourbon:
Pour in the 2 oz of bourbon over the muddled mint mixture. - Ice It:
Fill your glass with crushed ice. I love using plenty of ice so that the Mint Julep stays nice and cold! - Stir and Garnish:
Stir your Mint Julep gently to combine all the flavors, and then garnish with a fresh sprig of mint. Also, you can even give it a quick slap between your hands to release its fragrance!
Mint Julep Recipe Pro Tip from June:

For an extra touch of sweetness, you can make your own simple syrup by boiling equal parts sugar and water, then letting it cool. If you want to add a little something special, a dash of bitters can give your Julep a unique twist.
A Brief History of the Mint Julep at the Kentucky Derby

The Mint Julep has been the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby History since the 1930s, though its roots trace back to the 18th century. The drink may have originated in the southern United States, where it served as a medicinal remedy. By the time it made its way to the Derby, the Mint Julep had evolved into a refreshing, celebratory drink.
At the Derby in Kentucky, the Mint Julep is served in a silver or pewter cup, traditionally filled with crushed ice. The drink is so popular that over 120,000 Mint Juleps are served during the two-week Kentucky Derby Festival, making it an iconic part of the race experience.
While the exact year the Mint Julep became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby is unclear, it was solidified as a Derby tradition during the 1930s, thanks in part to Churchill Downs and its sponsorship of the beverage. Today, it continues to be a symbol of Derby day, enjoyed by fans both at the track and around the world.
